Born and raised in Bulgaria, Silvia Vassileva’s obvious skill is the result of both inherent talent and an impressive education. Vassileva earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in painting from Buglaria’s Academy of Fine Art. She exhibited her portfolio of paintings in Japan before settling in her contemporary studio in California. Vassileva is a pioneer in unexpected color palettes and surprising shade selections. She shows us the world in soft focus – and what a beautiful world it is.

Born Inspired

While most artists site the world around them as their primary source of inspiration, Vassileva’s muse is her own inner world.  While a physical subject may be necessary for some, she believes that her imagination provides ample stimulation.

“I believe my inspiration comes from within. It’s about my imagination and my highly sensitive receptors it’s about my reaction to the world that surrounds me, and a reflection of my own feelings. I don't need something visual in order to be inspired, I am born inspired.”

Beyond being born with the ability to see the world from an immaterial perspective, Vassileva discovered her unique ability to interpret her surroundings as a young schoolgirl.

“I began painting seriously at the age of 12, after my first art class. Before that, my creativity was suppressed by the realization that I have a lot to give, but no way to do it. I knew there was a lot I needed to learn in order to be free to express myself. Drawing and painting is like a foreign language – you can’t speak until you learn it!”

Fuel the Soul, Free the Mind

To say Vassileva paints with a purpose would be grossly understating her artistic drive. Art isn’t simply meant to be enjoyed, it’s meant to be devoured. For Vassileva, painting is a creative compulsion, and one that is essential to her existence.

“Painting is a necessity for my soul. It’s an addition and obsession. In order to function like a normal persona and live a balanced life, [I] paint daily! It’s like the steam of a pressure cooker that needs to be released.”

Vassileva is living proof that a blank canvas is all an artist needs to achieve spiritual fulfillment. Her tender love for painting is infectious, and it shines through her work.

“If you ask me which part of painting I like most, I think I prefer the beginning. The mindless part. The spontaneous part. First comes the analyzing, then the unifying.”
