One of the most influential post-impressionist artists, Georges Seurat created more than several iconic pieces. He pioneered multiple painting techniques, including chromoluminarism and pointillism. Seurat also painted several large-scale pieces that redefined the 19th century art world. Many of his pieces were created using a conté crayon on rough paper. With visible texture and a largely natural color palette, his work is as prevalent today as it was over 100 years ago.

A Sunday on La Grande Jatte
Undoubtedly, Georges Seurat’s most famous painting is A Sunday on La Grande Jatte. It stirred up intense controversy among the art world, as it broke the typical mold and expectations of the impressionistic style. However, this only gave birth to the following movement: Neoimpressionism. The painting shows a series of anonymous figures (primarily in profile), lounging on an island in the Seine river in Paris. There is something tranquil yet also eerie about the composition.

Final Study for Bathers at Asnieres 1883
This was the last piece before Seurat painted his final version of Bathers at Asnières. However, it became a famous work of art in its own right. It is an excellent example of the chromoluminarism he became so well known for. The location in the painting is actually located directly across from the park pictured in A Sunday on La Grande Jatte. These two paintings are perfect complements to one another.

Models Poseuses 1886-1888
Not only is this a stunning piece technically, but it also has a surrealistic quality because of the POV depiction of his own work, La Grande Jatte. This piece shows nude models standing in front of his own piece, an almost unnerving optical perspective. However, this piece was condemned for being too cold by art critics at the time of its completion. Especially because of the nude content, the seriousness in which the subject is presented was unconventional for the time.

Le Chahut
Le Chahut was originally exhibited at the 1890 Salon de la Société des Artistes Indépendants in Paris. It shows can-can dancers at the famous Moulin Rouge, and has several abstract and cubist elements. Compared to the two paintings we discussed previously, this color palette is much warmer with reds and earthy hues. He used a pointillist technique to achieve the spotted appearance of this stunning painting.

Young Woman Powdering Herself 1889
Created using oil on canvas, Young Woman Powdering Herself was painted between 1889 and 1890. Although the image shows a mirror that reflects a vase of flowers, an x-ray showed that Seurat originally painted a reflection of himself at his easel. This is the only known self-portrait ever created (and then painted over) by Seurat. His relationship with the subject in the portrait was kept largely secret.

Circus Sideshow Parade de Cirque 1887-1888
One of the reasons why Circus Sideshow Parade de Cirque is so famous is because it was the first piece Seurat painted set at night. The whole painting has an eerie glow, adding to the strange sideshow display. It was shown at the Salon des Indépendants in 1888. Although it shows a vibrant scene, the color palette itself is quite muted and solemn.

Channel of Gravelines
The Channel of Gravelines was painted the year before Seurat’s death. It has an ethereal color scheme and depicts a tranquil harbor in France. The unique perspective makes the painting appear stretched, as if it goes on infinitely. Seurat painted several iterations of this piece, he adjusted the proportions several times before achieving the final result.

Eiffel Tower 1889
The Eiffel Tower had only been constructed two years before Seurat painted the structure in 1889. He used his well-known pointillism style to showcase this new addition to the Parisian skyline. Seurat meticulously applied small, distinct dots of color to capture the play of light and shadow on the iron lattice structure, emphasizing the tower's intricate design and its symbolic significance as a marvel of modern engineering.
